Viscose & Rayon Shirting: Drape, Comfort & Care

In short: Viscose — also called rayon — is a soft, semi-synthetic fibre made from regenerated wood-pulp cellulose. It is prized for a fluid, silky drape and vivid colour, which makes it ideal for relaxed, flowy shirts. Its trade-offs are lower wet strength and a tendency to wrinkle, so it is often blended and needs gentle care.

What viscose actually is

Viscose sits between natural and synthetic: it starts as natural cellulose (usually wood pulp) that is chemically processed and regenerated into a fibre. That is why it feels soft and breathable like a natural fibre but can be engineered for a smooth, lustrous, fluid hand. Viscose is the most common form of rayon; modal and Lyocell are more refined members of the same family.

Why people love it for shirts

The trade-offs

Pure viscose loses strength when wet, can shrink, and wrinkles fairly easily. These are manageable with care and, more often, with blending — viscose is frequently combined with cotton, polyester or elastane to add durability, easy care and stretch while keeping its drape.

Care

Hand-wash or use a delicate cycle in cool water, don't wring, and dry flat away from direct heat. Iron on low while slightly damp. Blends are more forgiving. See the care guide.
