How to Wash & Care for Shirts by Fabric Type
In short: Most shirts last longest with cool washing (around 30°C), gentle drying on low heat, and ironing while slightly damp. Heat is the main enemy — it causes shrinkage, fading and fibre damage. Beyond those universals, each fabric has a few specifics, covered below. Always check the garment care label, which overrides general advice.
The universal rules
- Wash cool: cold-to-lukewarm water protects colour and prevents shrinkage.
- Avoid high heat drying: air-dry or tumble low; heat shrinks and weakens fibres.
- Don't overload: shirts need room to move so they rinse clean and crease less.
- Unbutton and remove promptly: hang or lay flat while damp to reduce wrinkles.
- Separate colours: wash darks and indigo pieces apart, especially when new.
- Skip excess detergent and fabric softener: they build up and dull the cloth.
Care by fabric
| Fabric | Wash | Dry | Iron |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cotton | Cool–warm | Low heat / air | Medium-high, damp |
| Linen / cotton-linen | Cool | Flat / low; remove damp | Medium-high while damp (or embrace creases) |
| Viscose / rayon | Gentle, cool (hand-wash ideal) | Flat, away from heat | Low, inside out, damp |
| Lyocell / modal | Cool, gentle | Low / air | Low–medium |
| Poly-cotton | Cool–warm | Low | Low–medium (needs little) |
Fabric-specific notes
Cotton is forgiving but shrinks with heat — keep it cool and it stays true to size; see the cotton guide. Linen softens with every wash but creases by nature; iron damp or lean into the relaxed look (linen guide). Viscose is delicate when wet — hand-wash or use a delicate cycle and never wring (viscose guide). Lyocell/modal are easy-care cellulosics that resist shrinkage well (Lyocell guide). Poly-cotton needs the least ironing and dries fast (poly-blend guide).
Drying and ironing tips
- Hang shirts on shaped hangers to keep the shoulders crisp.
- Dry indigo and dark shirts inside out, away from direct sun, to slow fading.
- Iron from damp for the easiest crease removal; use steam for stubborn wrinkles.
- A quick hang in a steamy bathroom relaxes light creases without ironing.
Stain and longevity basics
Treat stains promptly with cool water (hot water can set protein stains), avoid harsh bleach on coloured and delicate fabrics, and rotate shirts so no single one wears out faster. Good fabric, washed gently, easily lasts for years.

FAQ
How do you stop cotton shirts from shrinking?
Wash cool, avoid high-heat drying, and remove while damp. Heat causes most shrinkage.
What temperature should you wash shirts at?
Cold to lukewarm (around 30°C) for most shirts — it protects colour and prevents shrinkage.
How do you keep shirts from wrinkling?
Don't overload, remove promptly, hang while damp, iron damp, or choose twill/poly-cotton.
Should you iron linen and viscose?
Iron linen damp on medium-high; iron viscose low, inside out and damp. Check the label first.
