Dobby vs Jacquard Shirting: Woven Patterns Explained
In short: Dobby and jacquard both weave the pattern into the fabric rather than printing it on top. Dobby looms make small, repeating geometric textures; jacquard looms control every warp thread individually, so they can weave large, intricate designs. Both give a refined, durable, double-sided pattern that prints can't match.
Woven pattern, not printed
The key idea: in dobby and jacquard, the design is the weave. Because the pattern is built into the structure of the cloth, it appears on both faces, has real depth and texture, and will never wash or rub off the way a surface print eventually can. That is why woven-pattern shirting is associated with quality and longevity.
Dobby
A dobby loom can lift small groups of warp threads in set sequences, letting it weave small, repeating motifs — pin dots, tiny diamonds, fine stripes, subtle geometric textures. Dobby patterns are usually tonal (same colour, different texture), giving an understated, premium self-pattern that reads as plain from a distance and reveals texture up close. It is a favourite for elevated men's shirting.
Jacquard
A jacquard loom takes this much further by controlling each warp thread individually. That removes the size limit on patterns, so jacquard can weave large, complex, highly detailed designs — florals, paisleys, elaborate motifs and pictorial effects. It is the most intricate woven patterning available and is used where a rich, statement fabric is wanted.

Woven pattern vs print — when to choose which
Choose dobby/jacquard when you want durability, depth and a refined feel, and printing when you want bold colour, photographic detail or fast, cost-effective design changes. Many ranges use both: woven texture for premium plains and a printed line for seasonal graphics. For how these sit among the other weaves, see the weaves guide.
