Poplin vs Twill vs Oxford: Which Shirting to Choose
In short: Choose poplin for crisp, lightweight formal shirts; twill for soft, draping, wrinkle-resistant business shirts; and oxford for textured, durable casual button-downs. They are the three core shirting weaves, and the right one depends on formality, climate and how much ironing you want to do.

Poplin
Poplin is a fine plain weave — one thread over, one under — giving a smooth, crisp, matte surface. It is light, breathes well and presses to a sharp finish, which is why it is the classic dress-shirt fabric and a strong summer choice. Its one trade-off is that pure-cotton poplin creases the most of the three and looks best ironed.
Twill
Twill is woven with a diagonal rib (the same family as denim and chino). That structure makes it softer and more fluid than poplin, gives it a faint sheen, and — crucially — the best wrinkle recovery of the three. It is the practical pick for business and travel: smart enough for the office, forgiving through a long day.
Oxford
Oxford uses a basketweave, often a coloured warp with a white weft, producing a textured, slightly heavier, more casual cloth — the signature fabric of the Oxford button-down. It is durable and relaxed, perfect for weekend and smart-casual shirts. A finer version, pinpoint oxford, leans a little dressier.
How to choose
- Formal event or sharp office look → poplin.
- Everyday office, minimal ironing → twill.
- Casual, weekend, durable → oxford.
- Hot, humid climate → lightweight poplin (cotton or linen, ~120 GSM). See the GSM guide.
All three can be made in different fibres — the same weave feels different in cotton, linen or Lyocell — so pair this choice with the fibre that suits your needs. For the wider family of weaves, see the shirting weaves guide.

FAQ
Is poplin or twill better for formal shirts?
Poplin for the crispest dress-shirt look; twill for a softer, wrinkle-resistant, easy-care business shirt.
Is oxford formal or casual?
Casual to smart-casual — its texture and weight suit button-downs more than formal dress shirts. Pinpoint oxford is slightly dressier.
Which is most wrinkle-resistant?
Twill, thanks to its diagonal structure. Oxford resists wrinkles well; smooth poplin creases most.
Which is coolest for summer?
Lightweight poplin — thinnest and smoothest, especially in cotton or linen around 120 GSM.
